Welcome to Neptune’s Lookout at
Historic Estate Susannaberg!
Camp on St. John at this fully-functioning, modern Virgin Islands campground paradise! The campground is on the grounds of Susannaberg, the site of a former sugar plantation from the 1700s. The windmill tower of Estate Susannaberg was erected between 1780 and 1800 and is the second oldest windmill on the island of St. John. While the wooden framing and grinding machinery are long gone, the stone tower remains strong and sound. [Source: Library of Congress]
Estate Susannaberg is “one of St. John’s privately owned historic treasures,” and “is one of the oldest plantation sites on island, and its ruins are among the least documented and understood,” according to St. John Source.
A note from owner Ronnie Jones: From 1940 to present Estate Susannaberg has been owned by Halvor Neptune Richards and family. He was my grandfather. The windmill Tower of Estate Susannaberg is the second oldest on the island of St John. It was erected in the 1700’s, and it is the only mill to have an oven inside. You can find a large picture of Estate Susannaberg posted for all to see in the Cruz Bay National Park’s visitor center.
This Virgin Islands campground paradise sits perched at the top of St. John, and boasts sweeping views of Hawksnest and Caneel Bays, St. Thomas, and the Caribbean Sea right from your tent window. The campground has a community power source, permanent bathrooms with running water, and an outdoor camp shower (not heated).
